Spend the day with Dave Williams learning about the fascinating world of badgers. This comprehensive course will look at the biology and ecology of badgers. Learn how to survey for them and discuss the many threats they are currently facing. Dave will review the current legislation surrounding badgers and what the future holds before taking you to an active sett where you will see field signs and how they live.
Tutor Profile – Dave Williams
Dave has studied mammals for over 30 years, particularly researching small mammals such as the water vole and harvest mice.
He has worked with dormice since 2003. Dave set up the Surrey Dormouse project whilst the Mammal officer for SWT, starting with 3 sites and building up to 15. He has held a dormouse handling licence for 12 years and a special licence to mark them for 4 years. In 2015 the Surrey Dormouse group was formed. SDG now monitor over 20 woodlands in Surrey.
Dave’s other passion is the badger. He has been researching this nocturnal mammal since the late 1980’s. Having been closely involved in the changes of legislation and protection of this species he is now a recognised expert in the field. Dave lectures and runs training courses on badger ecology and surveying techniques for a variety of organisations including CIEEM.
