Beyond Phase 1 – An Introduction to Habitat Survey Techniques

Build on your existing knowledge of vegetation survey and explore what lies beyond the Phase 1 classification. This will be an introduction to the ways in which UK plant communities have developed and how they are influenced by environmental factors.

Learn how to identify these communities and how to describe them concisely and informatively, both to other vegetation scientists and to the lay person. This course will cover Phase II survey and the National Vegetation Classification, Priority Habitats, Annex 1 habitats and novel ways of assessing vegetation communities. We will also consider habitat condition and the structure of vegetation for other groups of organisms.

The course will include a substantial element of botanical identification and the use of indicator species in community recognition. There will also be an opportunity to use computer programmes for the analysis of vegetation data and as aids to identifying types of vegetation.
