Camera Trapping for Ecologists

Summary

This course serves as a thorough introduction to camera trapping and its uses in ecology, allowing proper utilisation of this technique and highlighting how to avoid potential pitfalls.

Description

Camera trapping is a fast-emerging technique to monitor animals covertly and is particularly useful for accurately determining the presence of protected species such as otter, badger and water voles. The recent reduction in cost of this technique has only accelerated its uptake.

This course serves as a thorough introduction to camera trapping and its uses in ecology, allowing proper utilisation of this technique and highlighting how to avoid potential pitfalls.

Training sessions include a brief history of camera trapping, how to set up camera traps in the field and the setting options to do so, how camera traps are used in wildlife conservation, survey design using camera traps, interpreting and analysing extensive data (including use of the latest time-saving analysis software), recognising behaviour, and general best practice guidelines (including how to avoid common errors and mistakes). Camera traps and wildlife law/data protection will also be discussed.

The course includes a hands-on field session and has been updated for 2017 to explore the use of new data management software.
