Early Season Grass and Sedge Identification

Summary:

A one day course aimed at building confidence to identify a wide range of grasses and sedges using non-flowering features. Participants will leave the course with confidence on at least 20 species.

Description:

This course will give participants the confidence to identify a wide range of grasses and sedges using non-flowering features.

Several species will be examined throughout the course and repeated extensively. Participants will be tested on these and will leave the course with confidence on at least 20 species.

Training sessions will be carried out on 3 different grasslands types, and also focus on using indicator grasses to assess habitat type and quality. This course aims to teach people to spot and memorise the key features for the majority of common species and some of the more specialised species found on unimproved grasslands.

The course will be run at Old Sarum, an Iron Age hill fort that contains a range of calcareous and neutral grassland communities. If time allows we will then move on to the nearby Figsbury Ring, another SSSI with unimproved grassland and diverse grassland flora.

Old Sarum is signed off the A345, 2 miles north of Salisbury. Meet in the main car park (where there are loos). Address: Castle Road, Salisbury, Wiltshire – SP1 3SD. There is a £2 charge for parking.
