Extended Phase 1 Survey
This course provides an introduction to the practice of the Phase 1 Habitat Survey, a nationally recognised method of collecting habitat data for environmental auditing.
Very often ecologists are required to undertake an Extended Phase 1 Survey where the opportunity is taken to collect additional ecological data, used to assess the need for further surveys including those for protected species and other issues of conservation concern.
In this course we shall cover the relevant theory of Phase 1 Habitat Survey as well as a number of protected species assessments such as for great crested newt, bats, badgers, water vole, etc. We shall also consider the needs for surveys such as NVC (plants) and River Habitat or River Corridor Surveys.
This course aims to teach the student the methodology of the Phase 1 Habitat Survey, using theory and practice and is not primarily a plant ID or protected species survey methodology course.
Who Should Attend?
Ecologists, conservation professionals, conservation volunteers, students
This course aims to teach the student the methodology of the Phase 1 Habitat Survey and is not primarily a plant ID or protected species survey methodology course.
The more skills a student comes to the course with, relating to plant ID or protected species work, the sooner she or he can put it into practice and obtain higher quality data.
Any previous study will be useful on for example protected species handbooks, survey methodologies for protected species, etc.
- Understand the Phase 1 Habitat Survey methodology
- Be able to collect Phase 1 Hab data and annotate a map accurately including target notes
- Understand how the data you collect might be used and interpreted
- Understand some, of the extensions to the habitat survey that you might be asked to undertake
- Be able to demonstrate a protected species assessment.
Refreshments are provided throughout the day. Lunch is not provided.
