Explore the weird and wonderful world of fungi. This Autumn, join us as we explore the field skills essential to begin your journey into fungi identification.

This beginners course is a starting guide to the skills required to begin identifying fungi in the field. You will learn valuable observational field skills; what to look for, what to record and how to record it. Looking at habitat, substrate and how the fungus interacts with its surroundings. This is the perfect course for beginners looking to learn more about the fungi around them and start to identify fungi groups.

This is a 4-week online course covering 4 topics, for which you will complete a variety of online resources and activities. Each topic is then concluded with an interactive Zoom workshop to complement the content.

Fungi enthusiasts and beginners will explore the techniques for identifying fungi in the field through the following topics:

    • Fungi Field skills: Field notes, understanding habitat and field equipment
    • Field Identification Skills

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

    • Record useful field notes and use the correct equipment to safely collect fungi
    • Make accurate habitat and substrate observations
    • Understand key morphological features to begin a fungus identification
    • Share this knowledge with friends, family, and fellow volunteers.

Tutor: Ali McKernean works in a large primary school in Manchester, and has been teaching fungi and celebrating UK Fungus Day with them for a few years, including log inoculation and growing oyster mushrooms on used coffee grounds. Ali is also a member of the North West Fungus Group and passionate about introducing fungi to the next generation (in fact, anyone at all), recently embracing social media and becoming known as ‘The Fungi Guy’. He makes short ‘beginner’s guides’ on YouTube that are fun and accessible by all. Ali has recently written for the Wildlife Trusts children’s magazine and through his outreach role hopes to introduce this remarkable kingdom to even more young people!
