Grass and Sedge Identification – Neutral and Calcareous Grasslands

This one day course will give participants the confidence to identify a wide range of grasses and sedges commonly encountered in lowland grassland habitats (including waste ground and road verges) using a combination of non-flowering and flowering features.

Nearly every species of grass and most sedges have at least one key feature which can be used to pinpoint them to genus and species level. This course aims to teach people to spot and memorise these characters for the majority of common species and some of the more specialised species found on unimproved grasslands.

The course will be run at Old Sarum, an Iron Age hill fort that contains a range of calcareous and neutral grassland communities. If time allows we will then move on to the nearby Figsbury Ring, another SSSI with unimproved grassland and diverse grassland flora.

Old Sarum is signed off the A345, 2 miles north of Salisbury. Meet in the main car park (where there are loos). Address: Castle Road, Salisbury, Wiltshire – SP1 3SD. There is a £2 charge for parking.
