Lichen in the Dales

This beginner lichens course will help you learn how to use simple identification keys and chemical tests to make an accurate identification of the lichen group you are looking at.

This course will include an introduction to lichens, what they are and how they differ from other plants. During the course, we will explore the various methods of collection and examination that can be used to study them in the field and at home and put these into practice. With the support of an expert tutor, you will gain confidence in using simple identification keys and chemical tests, and obtain an understanding of lichen biology and their impact on the landscape. In the laboratory, we will conduct close observations of the symbiosis and reproduction of lichens. At the end of the course, participants should be able to identify lichens as distinct from other lower organisms and place them approximately in their morphological group or family. They should also acquire confidence in using simple identification keys and chemical tests and obtain an understanding of their biology and impact on the landscape.

This course will cover:

  • Introduction to lichen
  • Field visits
  • Laboratory session to examine specimen
  • Methods of lichen identification

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Explain what a lichen is and how they are different to other organisms
  • Describe the methods that can be used to correctly identify lichen groups
  • Explain how lichens can indicate environmental quality
  • Identify some common lichens down to group level
  • Share this knowledge with friends, family and fellow volunteers
