Otter Survey Impacts and Mitigation
This course will provide an overview of otter legislation and look at otter ecology and survey methods. We will look at impacts to otter from a variety of development types as well as looking at mitigation and compensation options and examples. There will also be a field visit to look at otter signs and discuss survey techniques.
Reference will be made to the new CIEEM ECIA guidance in relation to reporting. Impacts discussed will include holt disturbance, exclusion, destruction and artificial holt construction. A range of case studies, including hydro-schemes and road schemes will be presented to help participants gain a greater understanding of otter mitigation and survey and the course will cover topics such as “what to include in an otter toolbox talk”.
The training will be delivered through classroom and field based activities (weather permitting). The field visit to a local site will look for signs for otter as well as discussing survey technique.
Opportunity will be given for questions and discussion of otter survey or mitigation queries and experiences. Advice on further reading and key references will be given. The course will be primarily based on Scottish legislation and examples, although will be largely relevant to participants throughout the UK.
