Vegetative Plant Identification

In many books and courses the focus of plant identification is flowers. This course aims to help improve identification of plants vegetatively using a variety of field techniques and using the Vegetative Key to the British Flora by John Poland. Looking at several families of plants across a variety of habitats, the participants will focus on the key structures and features which allow accurate identification of plants no matter what time of year.

Mark Duffell has had a lifetime interest in plants, gaining the RS Diploma in Horticulture, becoming ‘Young Horticulturist of the Year’ in 2001 and completing an MSc in Biological Recording. He now runs Arvensis Ecology, splitting his time between conducting botanical surveys and teaching botanical identification and survey techniques to undergraduates and postgraduates students of universities, consultancies and environmental organisations. www.ArvensisEcology.co.uk
