Director of International Evidence and Advice

The role
The post holder will lead JNCC’s international work through the newly created International Programme Board, making best use of the experience and capabilities within the organisation and with our partners to support the delivery of the UK’s international nature commitments and ambitions.

The work has a strong focus on mainstreaming nature: building our portfolio to provide data, information and advice to encourage and mobilise other sectors to co invest with governments, by effectively evidencing and emphasising biodiversity benefits to support nature recovery. The post holder will be leading on four international work areas:

  • International agreements providing scientific advice to support the development of international commitments including engagement with governments across the UK to inform the development of international policy positions and their implementation in the UK
  • International reporting advising on reporting commitments to ensure accountability as well as building an evidence base to help inform international investment ; integrating data from across the UK to meet these commitments.
  • Development and implementation of nature recovery strategies advising on the development of nature recovery strategies abroad to direct and inform investment, including Official Development Assistance, from the UK and others. This includes a focus on the UK’s Overseas Territories. The area of work also supports implementation in priority countries through provision of scientific advice and support for capability building in country.
  • UK international impact helping assess the impact of the UK’s consumption and trade on the natural environment abroad and how these impacts could be mitigated through trade arrangements and investment of aid.

Leadership:

  • You will be an authentic, visible and strategic leader able to clearly articulate JNCC’s vision, mission and values, through your work and actions, and be inspiring about our work and its future.
  • You will proactively collaborate with our Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to lead the organisation, collectively and efficiently, through the change needed to deliver JNCC’s mission, being confident in your engagement with staff and stakeholders.
  • You will be a high profile and influential advocate for JNCC externally and promote JNCC’s reputation for robust scientific advice.
  • You will advise the JNCC Chair and Joint Committee, deputise for the Chief Executive as required, and sponsor the Joint Committee International Subgroup.
  • You will participate in ELT’s collective leadership coaching for organisational health, as well as development in business planning, financial management, workforce planning, staff development and coaching, and cultural intelligence.

Resource Management:

  • You will be responsible and accountable for the resources (including workforce) allocated to you as Director of International Evidence and Advice in the CEO’s delegated budgetary control total.
  • You will manage your baseline Grant in Aid funding and forecasts for non core income to deliver the relevant outputs in the Business Plan subject to the limits and procedures outlined in the Financial Scheme of Delegation.
