Wildlife Trainee (Conservation) Berkshire Reserves
Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust Woolley Firs, near Maidenhead Ad expires in 1 week Fixed Term Entry Level Part Time
The Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust is a membership-based voluntary organisation, managing 90 Nature Reserves, influencing land management, and educating and encouraging all sectors of the community to care for local wildlife. If you want to work in the Environmental sector but lack the experience to land your first job, then a Trainee position with BBOWT may be just what you need.
We are looking to recruit four volunteer Wildlife Trainees to join our Berkshire Land Management Team based at Woolley Firs near Maidenhead, delivering a programme of works on our reserves. The Berkshire Land Management Team manages a suite of sites such as heathland, woodland, wetland and grassland across the whole of Berkshire. In order to manage these sites we have a large weekly volunteer team; plus cattle, sheep and Wildlife Trainees.
The Wildlife Trainee role for Conservation involves practical work on our nature reserves; restoring and improving habitats and connectivity for wildlife. Trainees will help to look after our livestock, repair and install site infrastructure, work with power tools and machinery, carry out species surveys and work with volunteers. They will spend some of their time assisting with the preparation and delivery of various community events. There is also an opportunity to assist other Berkshire teams with environmental education projects.
Alongside the day-to-day learning experiences, all trainees will receive a substantial amount of external and internal training, covering habitat management, species ID, surveying, community engagement and interview training among many others. This will include external accreditation such as the St John Ambulance First Aid at Work certificate and up to £1,000 of other training such as NPTC certification in felling small trees. Limited travel expenses are also available.
All recent Trainees in the Berkshire team have gone on to conservation roles. In the past two years the trainees from Berkshire have taken positions such as Assistant Land Management Officer for BBOWT, Wye Valley AONB Ecological Surveyor, Hampshire County Council Ranger, Warden for TCV, Seasonal Warden for BBOWT, Estate Management Assistant on a private estate and Warden at Dinton Pastures Country Park.
The position would suit those wishing to develop the skills required to follow a career in the conservation sector. Applicants should have a keen interest in UK wildlife conservation, learning and imparting conservation knowledge, a good level of physical fitness, a valid UK driving licence and be willing to supervise and lead volunteers. Relevant volunteering experience is also desirable. Please see the Role Description for a full list of essential and desirable criteria.
Hours: A commitment of 3 days per week for 6-12 months is essential. Work days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 8.30am- 4.30pm.
Closing date: Monday 3rd April 2017 at 9am.
Interviews: Wednesday 12th April 2017.
