Conservation Breeding Unit Horticulturist

At WWT we create and conserve wetlands and save species. As one of the UK’s leading wetland conservation organisations we have a long history of managing wetland sites and species.

We seek part-time volunteers to be based at the Conservation Breeding Unit (CBU) Facilities at our Headquarters in Slimbridge, Gloucestershire from March-October. We need you to help manage wet meadows and willow beds around the 2 hectare CBU facilities by following a mowing and pollarding regime designed to maximise biodiversity. Your green-fingered skill will also help manage the “kitchen garden” herbs and vegetables in our aquaponics-based water filtration systems for duck-ponds and you will also help us develop a British water-plant nursery. Occasionally you will help deliver care to a small population of breeding diving ducks, mainly through completing daily feeding routines. From time-to-time you may assist with buildings and enclosure maintenance. You should expect to undertake some physical work, mainly mowing, and repetitive daily plant care routines while following biosecurity procedures.

The role will be a stimulating opportunity for someone looking to develop or practise their horticultural skills and/ or looking to develop a career in wetland or wetland species conservation.
