Lead woodland creation champion – long forest project
The Woodland Trust is the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity. Founded in 1972, we were the first to stand up against the spiralling threats to our precious woods and trees, and we remain at the forefront of the fight to protect, create and restore UK woodland.
We will be working with Keep Wales Tidy through to March 2020 to deliver the Long Forest project. The Long Forest aims to significantly increase community interest and the practical involvement in the creation, restoration and management of hedgerows and hedgerow trees. As ‘Long Forests’, hedgerows play a vital role in providing food and shelter for wildlife, supporting agriculture, enhancing the Welsh landscape and linking fragmented areas of woodland.
Hedgerows and hedgerow trees across Wales are at severe risk from neglect, damage and removal. This exciting new partnership will ensure hedgerows throughout four areas in Wales (Pembrokeshire, Monmouthshire, Anglesey and Wrexham, Flint and Denbighshire) are better understood, recorded, valued and conserved. As a Woodland Creation Champion you will play a vital role in this work.
As this is a Lead Volunteer role you would be involved in providing guidance on larger scale hedgerow planting projects which is more detailed than other tasks.
A key focus of this role will be to provide advice and guidance to individuals, landowners, schools and community groups on the planting and restoration of hedgerows. You will also give advice relating to planting design, site suitability, species selection, protection, maintenance, further information on our products and planting schemes, and signpost to any specialist advice from Long Forest partners and others.
As a Woodland Creation Champion – Lead we may also invite you to attend occasional agricultural shows and events to promote woodland creation and talk with the public about your experiences.
You will be supported by the volunteer manager, lead volunteer and project officers responsible for your region and will have access to a wide range of resources.
It is an excellent opportunity to build, use or showcase your knowledge and understanding of habitat and hedgerow creation and restoration.
