North Living Landscapes Voluntary Trainee
Across North Yorkshire, our reserves team carries out vital practical conservation tasks, leading volunteer groups and carrying out office-based reserve management to enhance and protect nature. We are offering the opportunity for a new voluntary trainee to gain valuable experience within this team and develop skills in all aspects of habitat management.
Our reserves in North Yorkshire are incredible sites where you can see wildlife spectacles throughout the year. From the vast wetland bird haven at Staveley, to the flower-rich limestone grasslands of Burton Leonard Lime Quarries, with these opportunities you can expect to gain valuable experience in nature reserve management across a broad range of fascinating habitats and locations.
The role will be split between office-based tasks and practical habitat conservation work on various public nature reserves throughout North Yorkshire, with most time spent at our reserves nature reserves. You will develop skills and gain experience carrying out habitat management activities such as scrub clearance, ragwort pulling, livestock management, fence and gate repairs and surveying and monitoring, plus a variety of other tasks. Tasks often involve working with local volunteers to manage sites and part of the role will include leading volunteer groups in practical activities.
Office-based work will include researching, writing and developing management plans, preparing and supervising contract works, GIS and mapping, writing funding bids, fielding queries, as well as other reserves administration.
The role is for 12 months, for 3 days a week, comes with a competitive training budget and travel expenses.

Interviews will be held informally on Practical Conservation Task Day on Thursday 7th November in North Yorkshire. Invited candidates will join a volunteer group and participate in the task day together with an individual discussion with staff at some point throughout the day. It’s expected that the successful candidate will start late November- December.
