North Living Landscapes Voluntary Trainee- River Projects
Across North Yorkshire, we manage 30 nature reserves and have a number of exciting conservation projects on the go including two river restoration projects on the R. Foss and the R. Wiske. The team carries out practical conservation tasks, leading volunteer groups and carrying out office-based reserve management to enhance and protect nature. We are offering the opportunity for a new voluntary trainee to gain valuable experience within this team assisting with the river restoration projects. You’ll develop skills in many aspects of river restoration, surveying and partnership working through liaison with landowners, contactors and partner organisations.
The role will be split between office-based tasks and practical conservation work, surveying and liaising with contractors at various locations in the York and Northallerton areas. You will develop skills and gain experience carrying out riparian habitat management activities, fence and gate repairs and surveying and monitoring, plus a variety of other tasks. Tasks often involve working with local volunteers and there could be the opportunity to lead volunteer groups in practical activities. You will also have the opportunity to gain experience in the wider reserve team at other nature reserves.
Office-based work will include researching, writing and developing management plans, preparing and supervising contract works, GIS and mapping, fielding queries, as well as other reserves administration.
The role is for 12 months, for 3 days a week, comes with a competitive training budget and travel expenses.
