Visitor Welcome Volunteer
Do you need a new challenge in 2018?
Why we want you
The Forestry Commission at Fineshade Wood are looking for volunteers to join the visitor centre team. You will be on-hand to greet visitors and will go the extra mile to make sure visitors get the most out of their visit.
You would share your love of the wood, enthusing visitors of all ages about the wildlife, history and facilities on offer (you don’t need to be an expert; it is a good opportunity to learn!). You will help visitors to learn about the Forestry Commission’s policies such as why we charge for parking and where their money goes and you will also be on hand to answer queries and collect feedback from visitors.
You will be selling discovery passes and will sometimes be asked to do a meet and greet with school groups.
You will be mainly based in the visitor centre, however, you might be asked to help with other jobs such as admin tasks, car park marshalling or litter-picking at busy periods.
What’s in it for you?
You will have the opportunity to meet lots of new people from all walks of life and make a difference to their experience whilst in a charming setting.
Once you have completed the induction period, you will be given uniform and appropriate training. You also may be able to help support the Forestry Commission with future management of the site.
You would get free parking every time you volunteer and after completing an agreed number of hours of service, you would get a free annual parking pass (reviewed annually).
How much time would you need to give?
We usually do morning and afternoon sessions, 10am-1pm or 1pm-4pm. Any day of the week from March-October, but especially at weekend and during school holidays when volunteers are particularly essential. Even winter weekends are busy now, especially Sundays. You will be able to book your sessions via your supervisor.
What skills would you need?
You should be an excellent people-person with the ability to communicate with lots of different people in an enthusiastic way.
You should be able to work well on your own or in a pair, and be able to think on your feet. You should like problem-solving as you never quite know what you will be asked to do each day.
