Voluntary Trainee – South Reserves

The South Yorkshire Reserves Team currently have capacity to welcome two voluntary trainees to the team. Trainees assist the team in carrying out practical conservation tasks, leading volunteer groups, aiding with educational events, and carrying out office-based reserve management. The role will be working within the South Yorkshire reserves team based at our Gateway South reserve – Potteric Carr Nature Reserve, Doncaster. The role will also include work based at our other South Yorkshire reserves.

The Team is responsible for the delivery of the Trust’s mission across South Yorkshire including Doncaster, Barnsley’s Dearne Valley landscapes, and the Humberhead Levels – which encompasses partnership working across the borders to both Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. This involves the management of 21 nature reserves including our ‘Gateway Site’ at Potteric Carr, working with a wide variety of stakeholders, developing and delivering a range of projects from rivers to community engagement, and expanding our Trust offices and infrastructure to improve our operations in the South Region.

This is an incredible opportunity to be involved with such a broad range of reserves and project work, while gaining vital experience to help you stand out when applying for jobs in the conservation sector. You’ll be an integral part of our team, and offered a huge amount of support and encouragement. As you discover your strengths and interests, we can help tailor the traineeship around these, so that you get the best experience you can out of your time with us.

The role will be split between office based tasks and practical habitat conservation tasks. Time will be spent carrying out practical conservation as set out in management plans and work and will include the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of different tasks including grassland management, woodland works, fencing maintenance, track repairs, installation of signage, gates, bridges and supporting staff with contractors.  Due to the physical nature of these tasks, the role does require a reasonable level of physical fitness and willingness to be outdoors all year round.

There will also be the opportunity to gain experience of office based tasks including: researching, writing and developing management plans, preparing and supervising contract works, helping with funding bids, undertaking and managing surveys, fielding queries, as well as other administration.

Our Voluntary Traineeships come with a generous training budget and support with travel expenses. The Traineeships are for 3 days per week for 12 months, although there is flexibility to reduce this to 2 days per week if needed.
