Devon Wildlife Consultants (DWC) is a professional ecological consultancy with all profits gift-aided to support the work of Devon Wildlife Trust. This volunteer role is ideal for individuals who would like to gain experience in a career in ecological consultancy; they will assist in delivering all aspects of commercial consultancy work.
We are looking for someone who is highly enthusiastic about a career in ecological consultancy and is willing to learn. Volunteers with some relevant experience (e.g. an ecology-related degree, some plant identification skills) would be able to get the most from the role, but this is not essential. You will be able to follow instructions and protocols whilst also demonstrating initiative where appropriate. You will need a flexible approach to the role and the ability to work as part of a team. At all times you must work in accordance with DWC’s health and safety procedures. You should have good communication skills and the ability to act as an ambassador for DWC when accompanying staff on site. The candidate must also have a full, clean UK driving licence.
Volunteering with DWC provides an excellent grounding for a career in ecological consultancy. You will gain valuable experience in how a commercial consultancy operates, including an insight into the process of ecological work from compiling initial quotes, preparing and carrying out field work, analysing data and producing reports. You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge of standard wildlife survey techniques, botanical identification, protected species identification, habitat management, mitigation, wildlife legislation and site and work place health and safety.
For further information about what the role involves, please visit the following page of our website to download a task description: https://www.devonwildlifetrust.org/volunteering-opportunities/volunteer-ecologist-full-time
The placement is offered from approximately late-April 2020 to late-October 2020 to encompass the main ecological survey season; however, this can be amended slightly to take into account other commitments e.g. university term times. Specific dates for placement will be discussed upon appointment.
