Wildlife Trainees (Conservation) Chimney Meadows Nature Reserve x2
We are looking to recruit two volunteer Wildlife Trainees to assist with habitat management, maintenance of infrastructure, management of livestock and visitor engagement.
Situated on the River Thames, Chimney Meadows is part of an ancient landscape shaped by centuries of farming. Between willow-lined riverbanks and ditches, the fields provide ideal territory for the area’s bird life including barn owls, linnets and reed buntings. A network of ditches criss-crosses the site, providing wonderful habitat for waders and dragonflies. The reserve is our centre of livestock operations in Oxfordshire with breeding sheep and cattle.
The Wildlife Trainee role involves practical conservation on the reserves; restoring and improving habitats for wildlife. Trainees will help to look after our livestock, repair and install site infrastructure, use power tools and machinery, and lead volunteers. We would also like the Trainees to be able to chat to visitors and deliver guided walks after some training. In addition, there is an opportunity to assist other Oxfordshire teams with environmental education and events.
Alongside the day-to-day learning experiences, all Trainees will receive a substantial amount of external and internal training, covering habitat management, species identification, surveying, community engagement and interview training among many others. This will include external accreditation such as the St John Ambulance First Aid at Work certificate and other training such as Lantra Tractor driving. Limited travel expenses are also available.
The position would suit those wishing to develop the skills required to follow a career in the conservation sector. Applicants should have a keen interest in UK wildlife conservation, learning and imparting conservation knowledge, a good level of physical fitness, a valid UK driving licence and be willing to supervise and lead volunteers. Relevant volunteering experience is also desirable.
A commitment of 3 days per week for 6-12 months is essential. Actual days are negotiable.
