The Faculty of Biological Sciences is one of the leading life science faculties in the UK with research and teaching that competes with the best institutions worldwide. Our extensive research expertise means our courses are at the forefront of knowledge and reflect the latest developments in the field. Our position amongst the UK elite for bioscience was confirmed in the last Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE) – an independent government audit of research quality. We were ranked 4th for biological sciences by the leading scientific journal ‘Nature’ based on the number of staff producing research that was “world leading” or “internationally excellent”.

We are a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive universities, pursuing the creation of knowledge. Our research projects have the potential to make a major impact on global society. You can read about recent findings in our online research bulletin.

The Faculty also brings together people from government, business, healthcare and academia to deliver benefits to the wider society. This has helped to generate over 20 successful spin-off commercial companies.
