Although reindeer populations are naturally cyclical with numbers going up and down, it is man-made elements that are now behind this recent decline.
This species is restricted to riparian areas in Russia, China, Japan and possibly North Korea, and it now has been revealed that they are a key indicator of the health of the primary forests in which they live.
Reductions in population numbers prompted the UK government to pass legislation in 2007, which prioritised the protection of common toads and all UK reptiles.
In all regions across the continent, there is no single cause of the decline, however, they do all appear to be linked by rising temperatures caused by climate change.
