This bird is an endangered species in Norway, with numbers plummeting from around 160,000 pairs in the 1960s to just 15,000 breeding pairs today.
Not a bird of garden feeding stations, unless your house backs on to a farm, but one that, when you see or hear one, tells you that you’ve arrived in rural Britain.
A combination of climate change and habitat loss caused a range wide decline of nearly 4% per year between 1985 and 2013.
As recently as the 1960s the total population was in the thousands, so the species is now listed as critically endangered.
