Three year project that aimed to learn more about the lives of wildcats, reached its conclusion last week and announced that a new population had been discovered in Highland Perthshire.
Mortality was found to rise in the winter months between November and March, which coincides with a greater congregation of dugongs and an increase in the level of fishing activity.
Approximately 33% of the world’s common seal population is found in the British Isles (27,430) and 85% of this population in Scotland.
As recently as the 1960s the total population was in the thousands, so the species is now listed as critically endangered.
